Abstract
The perspective of "link" in new student selection has been attracting increased attention since the Report of the Central Education Council in 1999. Not only is increased clarification of the roles played at each educational level and the revision of curriculum necessary, but the process of university selection also warrants further investigation in order to foster the smooth transition to university education as set forth in the Report. This paper makes clear the nature of information students receive and consider before selecting an institution, the sources of information, the most significant factors in selecting a university, the people who are most likely to influence student decision making, and how students value their own choice, and also examines what measures are necessary in order to help students make appropriate and informed university selections, through a comparative analysis of the data obtained from surveys of students in Japan, Korea and China.
