This study aims to clarify the significance of Chinese piano works for piano education which focuses on the inheritance of Chinese traditional music. Interviews were conducted with instructors and piano teachers engaged in piano education in China and the following conclusions were drawn by qualitative analysis. First, four categories were extracted: “interest in piano arrangement works of Chinese traditional music,” “awareness of musical characteristics of Chinese traditional music,” “multiple functions of piano,” and “propagate Chinese traditional music with piano.” Further, it was found that although musical instruments other than piano have increased possibility of inheriting Chinese traditional music, playing piano is more suitable for the transmission of Chinese traditional music. This study thus highlights the significance of traditional Chinese piano pieces and the advantages of playing piano.
