In this study, we clarify the impact of the civic engagement curriculum on junior high school students. Further, we adopted a mixed-method approach to discuss the conditions for effective civic engagement lessons in junior high school. First, we conducted a questionnaire survey using the ICCS (International Civic and Citizenship education Survey) framework. This was completed by 1495 students at junior high schools. Second, we conducted qualitative, semi-structured interviews with three students. The considerations obtained from this research are as follows: (1) The main condition for civic engagement is dealing with content that is politically responsive within the school. (2) Good student relationships and role models for civic engagement should be built.
