The Course of Study for Junior High Schools was revised in 2017 and has been implemented since April 2021. With this revision in mind, this paper aims to show the ways in which stories can be dealt with in an EFL classroom. The research questions to be answered are as follows:
RQ 1: What objectives and teaching contents can be identified as relevant to stories in the new Course of Study?
RQ 2: How can stories be dealt with according to the objectives and teaching contents identified in RQ 1?
The answer to RQ 1 is to understand the general outline of a story, that is, (1) to arrange information in chronological order, (2) to follow the actions and emotions of characters, and (3) to summarize the whole story. In order to answer RQ 2, a textbook version (Sunshine English Course 3 for third-year junior high school students) of After Twenty Years by O. Henry was analyzed, and the details of the analysis are shown in the three tables of this paper.
