A Study of the Academic Marketplace in Chinese Research Universities : Cases of physics and philosophy

Abstract
Data for 855 physics and 542 philosophy professors and associate professors of Chinese major 55 research universities were analyzed. Some 35 to 52 percent of the faculty got Ph. D. degree from which they were employed. The alma mater is hired frequently as faculty in Chinese research universities. The higher the prestige is, the higher the percent is. The figure is higher in philosophy than in physics. The prestigious universities recruit more Ph. D. holder from foreign universities than less prestigious universities, especially in physics. Philosophy faculty is trained mainly in Chinese domestic universities.
