This paper aimed to discuss the meanings of care and caring for adult development, and the vision to achieve positive development by caring. According to the series of the author's empirical studies of identity development in adulthood, personal identity and care-besed identity had equal weight for adult identity. Both of them played the important roles not only in social and vocational life but also private family life. Adult lives developed in the circulation of identity and care. It was figured out as "The Cyclic Developmental Model of Identity and Care in Adulthood". This model suggested that adult lives developed in the following process: (1) Achievement of personal identity, (2) Affording the identity to the others, (3) Deep concern and commitment to others (=Care), (4) Achievement of identity of the commited others, (5) Consolidation of identity. Furthermore, the achievement of identity of the commited others developed the circulation of the next generation. It was considered that good balance of personal identity achievement and caring was important for adult development.
