The purpose of this article is clarifying what do the researchers think about the teaching writing poetry and how do they establish it in the English Education in the UK by examining the articles in the English in Education that is the all-round English Education Journal in the UK.
I considered 55 articles in that journal that I could collect and reached a conclusion: the period from 1960s to 1980s is the flourishing stage of teaching writing poetry; the period of 1990s is the slumping stage of it; the period after 2000s is the renaissance of it. Such transition of teaching writing poetry in the UK is profoundly affected by the Education Reform promoted in the late 1980s, diversification of social and language environment, and the reader response theories spreading in the literature education. In these historical shifts, I clarified that we can capture the figure of teaching writing poetry in the UK reflected in the traditional experientialism and language functionalism of the UK.
