Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the listening ability and the characteristic of the way that training found in American music textbook series Silver Burdett Making Music (2008) published by Pearson Scott Foresman. Especially in this study, listening activities seemed in the textbooks are analyzed through comparing with National Standards for Arts Education. It was revealed from the analysis that the important things for listening activities is to gesture to music and acquire technical knowledge of music in the lower grades. The former connected with description using appropriate terminology and analysis the elements in music representing diverse genres and cultures after Grade-5. The latter helped learning the uses of elements of music in the upper grades. In conclusion, it is clear that the editors of this textbook series expect learners to get the skills for analyzing, playing, and evaluating music by connecting the terminology and knowledge of music with aural example.
