This report clears the real process on the controversy about abolishment of "Practical Arts" which is one of the subjects in the elementary schools in Japan established under the occupation by the Ministry of Education and CIE in 1947. By the analysis of the records of curriculum committee and other documents on the controversy about the subject, the results were as follows: 1. Jeidy, P. and Ambrose, E. V. suggested that "Practical Arts" was not necessary as an independent subject on the idea of development of social studies. Japanese who worked for social study in the Ministry of Education and elementary schools offered opposition to set" Practical Arts" as a subject. 2. Homemaking teachers who were afraid of the abolishment of" practical Arts" presented the petition to Ministry of Education and National Diet based on the idea that homemaking education was essential to new home life construction.
