Mass screening for breast cancer was begun in Hiroshima Prefecture in April 1977 under the sponsorship of the Hiroshima Prefecture Adult Disease Prevention Association and with the cooperation of the Community Health Council. As a member of technical experts, the authors have being studied the methods for conducting the mass screening, and as the system for mass screening has generally been established. We wish to report the results.
During the seven years from April 1977 to April 1984, mass screening was conducted on 166, 849 women and breast cancer were found in 62 (0.037 %). The stage, method of diagnosis, and method of treatment of these cases are reviewed and the screening method are presented.
