The purpose of this paper is to establish the role of putting stickers into the individual child attendance notebooks in a kindergarten. The act of putting stickers into the individual child attendance notebooks is unique to Japanese kindergartens and nursery schools. In this study, we observed 3~5 years old children using their individual child attendance notebooks and also obtained data by means of the questionnaires to the class teachers. Our results show that its roles are not only for checking children’s attendance in kindergartens but also the child attendance notebooks 1) work as a kind of teaching material, 2) help children form relationships with their teachers and peers, 3) help them adjust mentally to their surroundings, and 4) teach them about the daily routines within the kindergarten.
