Abstract
Adolescence has long been characterized as a time when individuals explore and discover psychological characteristics of the self, and establish close relationship with friends of the same or opposite sex. Today, however, many researchers revealed that contemporary adolescents in Japan tend to worry themselves hurt by others and to avoid a deep relationship with their friends. The purpose of this study was to consider some psychological factors that seemed to be related to these tends in adolescent friendship: self-acceptance, the sense of acceptance by significant others, mental health, and social skills. The relations between adolescent friendship and these factors have been discussed. It was concluded that accepting the self and being accepted by others are closely connected with favorable relations with adolescents' friends.
