Switzerland has not a central administration of the school system. Actually it is hard to say that there is "one" system of schooling. All the 26 cantons have at least in parts different forms of public schools. That means school-reform is not primarily a national affair. So the article deals with reforms in the Canton of Zurich. The Canton had a leading role in the development of schools since 19th century. The actual reform started in the year of 1995 when the educational politics underwent a drastic change. There are seven fundamental maxims behind the diverse projects. The article discusses three of them: School autonomy, supervision of schools and new tools for teaching and school development. One of the tools is an experiment in self-teaching which is analyzed at the end of the article.
