Abstract
This study has two goals. One is to explain the conceptual framework of Character Education in USA which is not known well in Japan. And the other is to try to translate the Boyer's virtues (1995) to Japanese. The first goal is to explain the definitions of characteristic wards in character education, for examples character, virtues and values. Additionally I explained the important ideas in teaching these goals and the pitfalls to avoid in character education. For the second goal, I try to not only translate from English to Japanese but also to integrate Japanese traditional virtues. I translated ideas Boyer's virtues, respect, responsibility, perseverance, honesty, compassion, self-discipline, giving and courage. I showed that to integrate Japanese virtues into the translation will better enable students to understand the concepts, rather than rely on simple translation. I discussed helping students "to know the good, love the good and do the good" with Japanese virtues contribute to their becoming good citizens as well as international people of character.
