Abstract
This study aims to re-examine Iser's influential reading theory (Iser, 1976, 1978; Japanese translation in 1982) on reading and Japanese language classes in primary and secondary education. Criticism of Iser's theory will be taken and considered, and questions asked of the theory will also be clarified. For basic theory of reforming reading and Japanese language classes, limitations and general concepts (reading is reading for yourself) will be derived from Iser's theory, and consideration given to what should be introduced for reading classes in Japan.
