Abstract
Since the Meiji era, the singing-centered teaching had been given in the Singing of elementary schools in our country. In the Taisho era, ideas of art education were introduced from European countries and the need of teaching music appreciation was begun to make out. American music appreciation manuals were introduced in our country during the late Taisho era. From that time, gradual dissemination of teaching music appreciation by use of phonograph music was started. Yasujiro Kanemori, a music director of Attached Elementary School of the Shizuoka Normal School, also actively taught music appreciation in his Singing periods. According to my researches, aims, methods, choice of materials and curriculum of his teaching of music appreciation were influenced by methods of the teaching of American music appreciation to a considerable degree. His contribution to the music education was important, because unlike our particular educational philosophy of music appreciation which regards music appreciation as an aid to song teaching, he placed music appreciation independently of song teaching in the Singing curriculum.
