Abstract
Nowadays, the performance skill on the Asian musical instruments is primarily taught in the universities that have the faculty or department of music in Japan. Among them, Indonesian Gamelan is the most popular, and Indian Sitar is in the secondary position, while Chinese musical instruments like Erh-hu or Pipa are recently introduced. I have taught the Erh-hu at the seminar in ethnomusicology for recent two years, and I found Erh-hu is comparatively effective not only as a general guide to the world of Chinese traditional music, but in knowing its modernization. Students will understand a characteristic of Chinese music in practicing a various kind of tunes based on the differrent modal system, or with improvisational ornamentation. However, other Chinese musical instruments, especially stringed instruments are also worthwhile to be introduced. In the case of seminar in the university, it is more desirale for student to study music as a culture than to advance the performance skill, therefore, the instructor of Chinese musical instrument is required to have a musicological background.
