Abstract
This paper makes a comparison between students' positive and negative affects in English activities at elementary school, researching characteristics of children's motivations for studying English. The participants were 466 students (128 third, 120 fourth, 100 fifth, and 118 sixth graders) who have 35 class hours of English activities a year and 479 students (130 third, 114 fourth, 97 fifth, and 138 sixth graders) who have 70 class hours of that. It was found that negative affects in English activities of the 70-hour group were greater than those of the 35-hour group. It was also found that some negative affects were caused by interpersonal relations among students during English activities.
