Abstract
Recently the divorce rate is increasing in Japan, and most of mothers must nurse their children after divorce. Furthermore they must search their house, because most mothers leave their house with children. But it is difficult for fatherless families to find their houses and their jobs. Single female parent families usually face some serious housing problems and several problems. The aims of this paper are to clarify the regional disparities of housing and working conditions for mother headed families in Japan. Firstly, as for housing conditions of mother headed families, there are less family who live in owner occupied house than privately rent house and public house. That is because that many mothers moved out when they divorced. But most of them can not find a comfortable house in urban areas. And in rural areas, many single parent families live also in privately rent houses. Their housing conditions depend on their working conditions. Secondly, as for working conditions of fatherless families, there are many unemployed mothers in metropolitan regions. Especially, the younger mothers are, the more unemployed. It is hard to live with their infant for young mothers, because they can not perform both working and nursing. The support system is not enough for them. In the suburb of Tokyo, many mothers engage in service and manufacturing sectors. But their working conditions are not so good and unstable, because many works are part time jobs. In rural areas, there are less job opportunities than in urban areas. Their economic conditions are very serious, too.
