Abstract
The concept of 'Formative Play' was introduced into Art Education in Elementary School when the Course of Study was revised in 1977. At the present revision, the aspect of 'Play' was further emphasized and Formative Play was placed in the goals at the third and fourth grade. We are all aware that more than ten years have passed since the word 'play' was used for the first time in the Course of Study. However, the concept of formative play has not received wide recognition in school education in terms of its significance, teaching content and method. Therefore, the present paper examines a sample lesson from the viewpoints of two formative environments; namely, the visible environments, which include: (1) situation, (2) material, (3) tools, and the invisible environments, which include: (1) human (teacher, classmates, parents), (2) time, (3) information, and then acknowledges the significance of formative play, and makes the teaching content and method clear.
