Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine and contrast how female images changed in Japanese and Chinese lyrics. To achieve this, this study focus on ‘onna’ ‘nv’ in popular song lyrics of Japanese and Chinese from 1990s and 2000s.The following results were examined: There is a decrease in tendency to refer to women directly in Japanese lyrics, whereas a slight increase was observed in Chinese lyrics; In Japanese lyrics, sexual objectification of women was mostly observed in 1990s, whereas in 2000s, women were mostly taken as supernatural; However, in Chinese lyrics, women were mostly seen as emotional/delicate in 1990s, whereas in 2000s, women were mostly seen as a partner essential in relationship, or even as villainess/evil; In Chinese lyrics, women were not seen as sexual objectification.
