This paper analyzes the sensuous expressions of SNOW COUNTRY written by Yasunari Kawabata.
There are many "ようだった" "ようであった" "ように" "ような" expressions in SNOW COUNTRY. This is an important feature which is controlling the Aide-Viewpoint (側近視点) and increasing the sensuality of the work. But the English Edition, which is translated from the Viewpoint of a third Person-Protagonist, has changed or cut 40.1% of them. Of course, these facts show an essential difference between SNOW COUNTRY and its English Edition, but at same time we can also interpret them in the following way: the sensuality of SNOW COUNTRY written in Japanese has 40.1% more than its English edition in the sphere of "ようだった" "ようであった" "ように" "ような". Here, we can find the distinctive feature of Yasunari Kawabata's work and gain an appreciation of Japanese literature.
