This study aims to define the terms, “the outline” and “the main points” in the Course of Study for Foreign Languages. In the Course of Study, it is required to develop students’ ability to grasp “the outline” and “the main points” of English passages. These terms have been the keywords for developing reading comprehension ability, but many instructors are unsure about what these terms express because of their ambiguity. This study defines these terms by focusing on the structure of the explanatory texts.
