A high school lesson plan was developed to improve students’ ability to choose better expressions using an interpretation of “way of thinking,” which was a new term in the report of the Ministry of Education in Japan (2016). Based on this interpretation, the developed lesson plan encouraged students to consider what better expressions are and what should be considered for better expressions. As a result, a positive change in the quality of the students’ compositions was observed. This study indicates that teachers should improve their students’ ability to think of better expressions by showing them new perspectives: i.e., purpose, audience, and situation.
