As the first step to the development of a computer-based program teaching people with autistic disorders to read emotions from vocal expressions, in this pilot study, we made a trial edition of the program and tried it actually to children with autistic disorders. They were 3 schoolchildren and 2 junior high school students. The results indicated the usefulness of the program to teach the recognition of vocal expressions. However, the future problems which should be improved were also found. These were re-arrangement of the vocal stimulus after rating the degree of diffi culty to understand them, making appropriate hint and generalization tasks, and improvement of the program corresponding to the great difference in the ability of the autistic individuals, and so forth.
