One of the Practical Research Enhancement Projects on Special Needs Education designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s was held at Mukougaoka Kyoto Prefectural Special Needs School for two years, 2018 and 2019. This research had been implemented in advance of the New Course of Studies for Special Needs Schools that is implemented from 2020. In order to realize “a curriculum opened to society”, students and teachers worked with parents, local residents, public institutions, and private enterprises. Additionally, the results of this project were carefully and frequently disseminated in newspapers, broadcasts, and school website. In class activities improvement, it was carried out proactive, interactive and deep learning, and in curriculum improvement, it was based on curriculum management, and conducted practical research toward the smooth implementation of the new special needs school course of study. Two university faculty members were involved as research collaborators. One was in charge of promoting class improvement, instruction content and evaluation, and the other was in charge of establishing consensus about the social meaning of this study and advice related to school management. Through the promotion of collaboration among this special support school members, local residents, public institutions and private enterprises, changes in this special needs schools and the community were found as developing selfreliance, social participation and social contribution with great results by students with disabilities.
