Abstract
The aim of this study is to construct the framework for "classroom humor" research in Japan. Many studies about this topic have been done recently in Japan, and the increasing interest in this field causes confusion. Therefore it is necessary to present a systematic map to make it clearer. In this paper, the new framework is proposed by referring to foreign literatures, mainly, SCHOOL HUMOUR (written by Wilfred B. W. Martin & Ishmael J. Baksh). In this book, the eight aspects of "classroom humor" researches are shown: (1) A developmental view (2) Formal and informal classroom (3) Class clowns (4) Language and humour (5) Subject specific sumour (6) Humour and test performance (7) Functions of classroom humour (8) Potential dangers. It is important to focus on these eight aspects in the research of "classroom humor". It seems to have some problems, however, if their aspects is applied to Japanese classrooms as it is. Here is a proposal of the new suitable framework for Japanese classroom based on Martin & Baksh's opinion. It consists of the following twelve aspects: (1) The need and function of humor in classrooms (2) The need of a sense of humor for teachers (3) Relationship between humor and classroom atmosphere (4) Humor for the study environment (5) Humor for the study object (6) The meaning of humor for teachers and students (7) Danger of classroom humor (8) Cultivation of sense of humor (9) Humor and counseling (10) Humor and test (11) A developmental view (12) Humor for life environment. This new framework discussed here is useful to think about "classroom humor" in Japanese classrooms.
