Abstract
Academic help-seeking is an important learning strategy which should be used when students solve difficult problems. However students often avoid asking question or requesting help even when they need help. Some previous studies have explored what factors affect their academic help seeking. This paper reviewed recent studies on the academic help seeking from three points of view: (1) features of help seekers (sex, grade, competence, achievements goals, and social characteristics), (2) features of helpers (a teacher or classmates). (3) classroom environments on academic help-seeking (structure of the class-room activity and classroom climate). Two points were emphasized for further research on academic help-seeking; (1) taking into account the both features of helpers and qualities of academic help seeking on the occasion of investigating that student's individual characteristics influence their academic help-seeking, (2) investigating cultural differences of academic help-seeking between Japanese culture and Western culture.
