Abstract
Although in Japan there is an abundance of food, many problems existing in regards to eating behaviors. For example, binge eating or abnormal dieting. Due to the socio-cultural influence, healthy eating habits are difficult to establish. Through literature research I have identified psychological factors attributed to causation and prevalent of eating problems. Examples of psychological components are the intense of drive for thinness, body satisfaction, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. Moreover social norms affect these psychologi-cal components. Because these elements have significant influence on maintaining controlled eating behavior, only knowledge pertaining to nutrition and harm of dieting are not useful. For health education to be effective in empowering an individual in self controlled eating, these factors should be implemented within the health education curriculum.
