This paper aims to investigate the understanding of Teacher Talk techniques by pre-service teachers studying at a graduate school and to examine how their understanding changed after receiving explicit instructions about Teacher Talk. It was found that prior to receiving the instructions, the students were not able to notice anything other than visual gestures and the use of their mother tongue. However, after receiving the instructions on Teacher Talk, they noticed techniques of which they had previously been unaware, such as how to “rephrase” or “use voices” to convey messages. Thus, growth was observed in almost every participant.
