The purpose of this study was to review the evidence-based clinical psychological studies on transference during psychotherapy. A PsychINFO search identified 17 studies fitting our criterion. These studies could be classified into three categories: studies based on structured or semi-structured interviews, client and therapist ratings, and outside experts ratings. The studies used four rating methods. These studies investigated the therapists' impasses, correlation between transference and outcome, relationship factors (attachment, empathy, real-relationship, and working alliance), and the pattern of transference. Moreover, there was only one evidence-based study conducted in Japan.
