Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cross-cultural orientations and self-determination theory. A total of 125 seventh graders participated in this study. The cross-cultural understanding orientation (CCUO) scale and the crosscultural communication orientation (CCCO) scale were constructed, and they had a single factorial structure with αreliability coefficients from .84 to .86. It was evident that less than 60% of the students wanted to communicate with foreigners in English. The multiple correlation analysis indicated that both the CCUO scale and the CCCO scale were positively related to both intrinsic motivation and amotivation. As educational suggestions, English teachers ought to take into consideration the fact that more than 40% of them do not want to join the communicative activities positively and that lessons of cross-cultural understanding may discourage some of them from learning English. Thus, it may be more necessary that English teachers acquaint their students with other values of learning English as a communicative tool than today.
