Abstract
This paper explores some characteristics of faculty at low-prestige universities. Focusing on faculty who question a philosophy of the academic profession which is to balance teaching with research, it examines the actual condition of their teaching and research activities, and their perspective towards them.

The research found that they have the following: those who devote less time to research; those who do not conduct educational activities required at these universities; those who cannot believe that their research contributes to educational activities; those whose research productivity are relatively low; those who are not satisfied with their teaching and also research activities; and those who have difficulty balancing teaching and research.

However, not all of the characteristics above are shared by the faculty placing disproportionate emphases on teaching, and those placing much emphasis on research. That is to say, the characteristics that are shared between both types of faculty are only that they cannot believe that their research contributes to educational activities, and they find it difficulty to balanced teaching and research. The faculty placing disproportionate emphases on teaching do not hold the characteristic that they do not conduct educational activities required at low-prestige universities, and on the other hand, the faculty placing much emphasis on research do not hold characteristics that their productivities of research activities are low.
