Abstract
Racial Harmony was the founding declaration of Manchukuo( which is called the Puppet State of Manchukuo by Chinese), the puppet regime established by the Japanese colonists in China in 1932. This declaration, which was widely consented by colonists, also became the background for several literary works. This paper aims to study the image of Racial Harmony through the novel Coolie by Haruko Ushijima, who was one of the most representative female writers of the Manchurian literature. First of all, this paper analyzes the partnership between Japanese supervisior and Chinese coolies in order to reveal how the dream of Racial Harmony is expressed by the work. On the basis, this paper examines the problems reflected in the works,to reveal Haruko Ushijima’s nationalism reflected from the image of coolie, and her emotional confliction. As a result, this paper shows that coolie is only a subject included by the colonial policy theory, the reality deviated from the declaration, and also points out the limitation and paradox of Haruko Ushijima.
