Abstract
This study compares a veteran teacher with a novice teacher concerning the viewing of the videoed contents of two of their respective classes as a means for them to reflect on these classes. Each teacher reviewed their classes while watching the two videos recorded from the viewpoint of the teachers themselves. This paper analyses where the teacher looked during the class, the reason why the teacher looked at a child, and also other considerations that teachers reflected on their actions in class. The results of the study are as follows: (1) The veteran teacher commented on the classes at a rate of once a minute. This rate was 2.5 times that of the novice teacher. (2) The veteran teacher mostly observed children closely with a specific purpose in mind. On the other hand, the novice teacher mostly observed children only while moving through the class and monitoring children nearby. (3) Both teachers mostly used the child’s comprehension at that point of the class as a means of evaluating the child’s comprehension and general attitude. Finally, two possible future directions for further research and teacher training improvements were considered.
