Abstract
The causative-transitive sentence is a transitive sentence whose subject is not an actor, and can be rephrased as a causative (ex: Mafia no boss ga keibiin wo koroshita=Mafia no boss ga buka ni keibiin wo korosaseta. (The mafia boss killed the security guard=The mafia boss made/ordered the henchman to kill the security guard)). Although Japanese transitive sentences with non-actor subjects have been studied for a long time, little attention has been given to the causative-transitive sentence. The aim of this paper is to investigate the pragmatic conditions of usage for the causative-transitive sentence. In order to investigate the pragmatics of causative-transitive sentence we used a questionnaire about the interpretation possibilities of such sentences by Japanese native speakers. The results show two pragmatic conditions. One is "the event is difficult to do by oneself", the other is "the event is more abstract". When a transitive sentence satisfies either of these pragmatic conditions, we can interpret a transitive sentence as a Causative-transitive sentence.
