Abstract
Enrollment of students with disabilities in higher education has increased significantly, and legislation for people with disabilities has also rapidly developed. The following study explores research issues of students with disabilities in higher education through the review of related literatures. Students with developmental disabilities such as Learning Disabilities (LD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in compulsory education have increased and various support systems for them have been implemented earlier than in higher education. It is indispensable for higher education researchers to deal with students with disabilities in each area of college access, student experience, and student outcomes referring to research findings in the field of compulsory education and collaborating with other area such as law, medicine, psychology, etc. On the other hand, we have to recognize the characteristics of higher education. For example, there are commonalities and differences between compulsory education and higher education concerning reasonable accommodation. Accommodations that mean the changing how a student learns material is necessary in higher education, but modifications that mean the changing what a student is taught or expected to learn is not required. Furthermore, teachers should be responsive to the needs of compulsory education students, but students are responsible for requesting needs in higher education. We also take into consideration the relationship or conflict between academic freedom and rights of students.
