Wang Xizhi’s epistles are considered to be personal documents that record his life, as well as an individual history of the aristocracy during the unquiet times of the Jin Dynasty. In addition, the epistles are valuable records describing the society of the time in a frank manner. Many facts can be learned from the epistles that have never been mentioned in historical books such as Jin Shu and Shi Shuo Xin Yu. In this paper, the authors utilize Wang Xizhi’s epistles to explore the situation of his life during his hermit period.
