In recent times, landscape policy comes under the spotlight, because the landscape law was newly enacted by the Central Government in 2004. It becomes problematic whether the landscape law will have a beneficial effect in carrying forward the landscape conservation policy. Therefore this paper intends to clarify the local inhabitant's evaluation of the surrounding landscapes and their opinion to the landscape conservation by employing a method of questionnaire survey. The study area is Higashi-Hiroshima City, in which rapid urbanization is going on in recent times.
As a result, it is revealed that the local residents have common dimensions in evaluating the landscape. However there are some diversities in opinions for the landscape conservation. Therefore, it is very difficult to realize the conservation of red roofed farmhouses, though the landscape itself is highly evaluated by the local residents. For promoting the landscape conservation policy, the opportunity for learning and discussing on the landscape issues should be provided by the local authority (Highashi-Hiroshima) and non profit organizations (NPO).
