Abstract
Orientalism is a kind of prejudice on the part of western countries toward the oriental world. The research goal of this paper is to explain how modern Japan placed itself between the West and the East, using the changing attitudes of modern Japan toward foot binding, a uniquely Chinese custom, as an example. The paper rediscovers the Japanese version of orientalism and analyzes the reasons for its growth and development. The paper suggests, as a way of avoiding the cultural domination of orientalism, new possibilities of attitude to women who have undergone foot binding, in order that they be humanized.
