Abstract
Japanese industrialist Shibusawa Eiichi's visit to China in 1914, attracted numerous attentions within Japan and overseas. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Chinese media's perception of Shibusawa Eiichi and how his speeches during the China visit were comprehended, by analyzing relevant newspaper articles. Shortly before the outbreak of World War I, China was cautious about Japan and was distrustful about Shibusawa Eiichi's visit to China. At the same time, due to Shibusawa Eiichi's profound understanding of Chinese history, Chinese culture and Confucianism, his visit was highly expected. Such complicated feelings were included in Chinese newspaper articles about Shibusawa Eiichi's China visit. This paper is not only an indispensable part of the study of "Shibusawa Eiichi and China", but can also reflect the Chinese attitude toward Japan at the beginning of 20C to some extent.
