Abstract
Through 4 studies, the influences of group context, task prototypicality, and two components of individuality on the interpersonal upward comparison process was examined. Study 1 showed that interpersonal upward comparison with ingroup member (vs. outgroup member) and on the task area with high ingroup (vs. outgroup) prototypicality gives higher threat to individuals' self-evaluation. In study 2, reliability and validity of the scale of two components of individuality Japanese version were confirmed. Study 3 showed that for people who are high in both differentiation and independence dimensions of individuality, threat from the upward comparison with the ingroup member was low. Finally, study 4 demonstrated that the effect of two components of individuality on aversive influence of the upward comparison does not relect the effects of self-esteem which has high correlation with th independence dimension of individuality.
