Abstract |
The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of school inspections that focused on character education on the East Coast of the United States. We visited five schools and found that the schools had unique approaches to character education. One of the schools had been named a National School of Character in 2003. This award was given by Character Education Partnership an organization that promotes the development of programs about character education. Two of the schools were public schools in the Brookline Massachusetts Public System. We found that the religious schools had core values based on their religious doctrines. Some of the other schools' core values were based on their mission statements or on feature of their communities. One of the schools did not have a clear statement about character education. However all of the schools had programs or extracurricular activities that taught character education. We found that in one small geographical area there was grate diversity in the kind of character education being taught.
