Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to develop educational materials that foster favorable attitudes by appreciating the beauty of mathematics. Specifically, we developed teaching material focusing on the silver and golden ratios for sixth graders in elementary school, and analyzed the contents of questionnaires. We confirmed that the educational material developed had a positive impact on students’ appreciation for the beauty of mathematics, and on their attitudes toward mathematics. For instance, 90% of the students had the desire to learn more through the teaching material. Furthermore, the study shows that it is probable that students appreciate the beauty of mathematics by exploring the silver and golden ratios in junior and senior high school as well as in elementary school. As an example, we explain the beauty of mathematics that high school students are able to appreciate through the connection between the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence in this paper.
