Abstract
With the use of unanalyzed terms, discourse on English Language Teaching in Japan is often too simplistic. The current paper examines media studies and sociological studies to establish an analytical framework for the discourse on ELT. Media studies provide six stages of language use: primary orality; proto-writing literacy; manuscript literacy; print literacy; second orality; and multitude-media literacy. Luhman's sociological theory distinguishes four types of differentiation: segmentary; center-periphery; stratificactory; and functionary. The use of English in the contemporary world is directed toward multitude-media literacy, which is based on print literacy and second orality, and furthermore functionally differentiated. ELT must reflect these features of language use.
