英語教育学という考え方が提唱されたのは1960年代である。初期の段階での研究はもっぱら欧米における応用言語学の研究を参考に, その研究内容や研究方法を追従するものが主流であった。

そのため, 比較的短期間で多数の論文を産出することができたが, わが国の英語教育の実状を解明し諸要因を改善するという面において直接的な貢献が少なかったように思える。

本論文では, これまでの英語教育研究を, 主としてその研究内容と研究方法から分析し, そこから問題点を導き, これからの研究の方向を展望した。その要旨は以下の通りである。

研究内容については, まず, わが国における英語教育の事実を解明するものでなければならない。

さらに, 現在の英語教育パラダイムの転換を図る研究内容が要求される。したがってマクロレベルでの研究が求められるために, 研究方法も大規模なプロジェクト型の方法が取られなければならない。また公共性, 再現性, 操作性が要求されるので, より科学的な手法を導入する必要もある。

The study of English Language Education (ELE) began in the 1960s. It was established on the basis of EFL or ESL study in the US and European countries. That's why a lot of papers were published even in the early stage, but it caused some problems at the same time. One of them was that few of them contributed to the improvement of ELE in Japan. In this paper I analyse the present situation of ELE study in Japan, especially from the viewpoint of the domain and method of research, clarify some of the problems and propose my suggestions for the future. They are as follows.

We should pay more attentions to ELE in Japan and our study should be to reveal the reality of the situation. In addition to that, the coverage of research should be broadened, eg. research on the optimal class size or frequency of English classes. Through such research we should change the paradigm of ELE in schools.

As for the research method, it should have a more rigorous scientific basis. And large scale research projects are needed.
