本論は, アメリカで高く評価されているブラウンの家庭科教育理論の解明を意図している。ブラウンの家庭科教育理論は, 学習者, 知識, 社会の概念から成る教育の視座と家族に関する概念を明確にして, 家庭科教育の目標と内容を決定するための概念体系を提示するものであった。ブラウンは, 家族を個人の自己形成と社会形成に参与する能動的な行為者とみなし, 家族の行為体系を家庭科の中心概念としている。家庭科教育の目標は, 家族の幸福に向けて, 思考と行為において自己決定できるよう, 家族構成員としての個人の発達を援助することであり, その内容は, 家族の永続的な関心事の観点から実践問題を媒介として構成されている。ブラウンの理論に基づく家庭科カリキュラムでは, 実践問題の解決過程を探求する方法を学習させることにより, 家族の行為体系についての概念形成, 批判的な思考力, 推論に基づく倫理的な意思決定能力が育成され, 正しく認識し, 道理にかなった行為がとれるようになると考えられている。

This paper aims at clarifying the theory of home economics education of Marjorie M. Brown. Her contribution in home economics education is highly appreciated in the United States. In her theory, she described the educational perspective which is composed of the conceptions of the learner, knowledge and society and conceptions regarding the family. Moreover, she stated the conceptual scheme which decide the goal and content of home economics education. According to Brown, since the family is regarded as an active agent involved in the self-formation of the individuals and the formation of the society, then the concept of the systems of action in the family can be considered of major importance to home economics education. The goal of home economics education is helping the development of individuals as family members to become self-directing in their thinking and acting toward well-being of the individuals within home and the family. Being grounded on the theory of Brown, the content of home economics education is organized around practical problems used as a vehicle from the viewpoint of perennial concerns to the family. By learning ways of solving practical problems, the learners will inquire into the processes which include conceptualization of the systems of action in the family, critical thinking and ethical decision-making based on reasoning that could provide them with a basis for the rational thought and reasoned action.
