高校生の文学的英語能力に関する実証的研究

実用主義的色合いが強まった英語教育では, 文学不用論がしばしば議論され, 英語教科書にも文学教材はあまり見られない。しかし, この状況の良し悪しを判断するための実証的な証拠がない。このことを考えていくためには文学的英語能力と一般的な英語能力それぞれの構造, 両者の違いや関係が示される必要がある。その第1段階として, 本研究では独自に作成した文学的英語能力テストと一般的英語能力の目安と考えられるセンター試験のスコアをそれぞれ従属変数として重回帰分析を行い, 共通の独立変数(英語語彙レベルテスト, 英語産出語彙テスト, 英語文法テスト, 現代国語テスト, 動機強度アンケートのスコア)による決定係数(R2)を比較する。分析の結果, R2間に違いが見られ, 2つの従属変数の構造の違いの可能性が示唆された。R2と変数間の相関係数(r)をもとに考察を行い, 文学教材の有用性を考察するための実証的証拠の1つを提示する。

In recent English language teaching in Japan, which tends to emphasize practicality, there have been claims that literature is of no use. In accordance with this, textbooks seem to have few literary texts. There is, however, no empirical evidence justifying this situation. In order to consider whether this current situation is appropriate or not, models of literary English competence and general English competence, and the differences between them, need to be described. As a first step towards this, in the present study, multiple regression analyses were conducted by regarding the scores of a literary English competence test and the Center Test as the dependent variables, and those of five tests (English vocabulary level test, English productive vocabulary test, English grammar test, contemporary Japanese test, and questionnaire for motivation to study English) as independent variables. The results showed a significant difference between the R2 values. Discussions based on R2s and correlation coefficients between variables are presented as one piece of empirical evidence for the consideration of the utility of literature in ELT from now on.
