〈記憶〉を共有することが、たとえ人びとの生活に不快さをもたらすものであったとしても、それが少なくとも生きるために不可欠のことであることに『ザ・ギバー』(L・ローリー)の中心人物ジョーナスは思い至った。

子どもにとってもっとも身近な文化の記憶媒体とは書物であり、そのなかでも文学は特殊な位置を占めると言つてよいだろう。私たちが求めていくことは、文化の記憶媒体としての文学を通じての学びをつくっていくということなのである。文学という〈智慧〉を伝え、受けつぎ、共有していくことを、私たちは求めていかなければならない。

Jonas, the twelve-year old boy in Lois Lowry's The Giver, realizes the importance of retaining and sharing memories among his people, however hard and cruel they are. In preserving memories from generation to generation, one of the most familiar mnemonic devices is literature. In this sense, the role of literature education is very important. The act of teaching literature must be that of inheriting, imparting, and sharing memories through literary works.
