The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of threats to freedom by a stranger in a general social situation on psychological reactance. We supposed that the following effects would be seen in the process of psychological reactance arousal. (1) Negative effect from justification of threats to psychological reactance (affective resistance) (2) Positive effect from magnitude of threats to psychological reactance (affective resistance) (3) Positive effect from psychological reactance (affective resistance) to semi-direct attempts at restoration of the obstructed freedom (verbal resistance) and to direct attempts at restoration of the obstructed freedom (behavioral resistance) From the results of path-analysis, we confirmed (1) and (2), but could not find (3).
